Resilience is the ability to adapt and bounce back from adversity. We can build resilience in our relationships, communities, and ourselves. Resilience gives us the strength to overcome challenges and barriers. It also helps us to deal with large-scale events, such as public health emergencies. Resilient Wisconsin’s mission is to give everyone in our state the opportunity to live their best lives.

There are many different types of resilience that we can develop to help us overcome challenges.

  • Physical Resilience. Physical resilience helps our bodies overcome physical health challenges. It can help us bounce back from an illness or accident. It can also help to heal or manage ongoing or chronic health conditions.

  • Mental Resilience. Mental resilience helps us to work through tough times by developing problem-solving skills.

  • Emotional Resilience. Emotional resilience helps us respond to challenges that bring about negative feelings or emotions like anger, fear, vulnerability, or sadness.

  • Social Resilience. Social resilience gives us the ability to connect with those in our lives so we can support each other through difficult times.

Some practices you can incorporate into your life that will help you to build resilience include leaning on healthy relationships, taking care of your body, avoiding harmful behaviors, taking charge, checking in with your feelings, learning from the past, and asking for help when you need it.
